Cold Storage

Success Stories:
Permanent Load Shift Project
San Diego Gas & Electric (SDG&E) selected EPS to install automation controls for a leading cold storage facility as part of their Permanent Load Shift (PLS) program. The solution consisted of a zone control module (ZCM) and other necessary instrumentation to shift the load from the hours of 11 AM to 6 PM and from May 1 through October 31. EPS identified and installed the appropriate ZCM to control multiple ice makers, compressors and condensers. EPS programmed the ZCM to control the fans and solenoids within the required timeframe, and monitored and verified the system for proper operation.
The net result: 1.7 MW of load shifted from on peak to off peak periods and SDG&E selected EPS to implement this program at several additional facilities.

Energy Efficiency Refrigeration Controls Project
EPS Corp performed a detailed energy analysis of a cold storage facility in Southern California. EPS determined that the installation of an upgraded controls system would allow for the implementation of several energy conservation measures. These included floating discharge pressure, cycling evaporator fans, defrost control and the ability to participate in demand response programs. In addition to providing a very attractive investment option, the control system reduces maintenance costs, allows remote monitoring of systems and assists with regulatory compliance. EPS completed this project as a turnkey solution, including all required electrical installations.
The net result: Annual savings of $81,256 with a payback of approximately 7 months.

Energy Efficiency Project
Under PG&E’s Non-Residential New Construction (NRNC) program, EPS Corp performed an extensive energy analysis for a natural gas extraction company. EPS determined the environmental impact of implementing energy efficiency measures. We evaluated multiple options for refrigeration systems and recommended installing an evaporative condenser with floating head pressure control, instead of the industry standard air-cooled condenser with fixed head pressure.
The net result: This project resulted in over 3.7 million kWh of sustainable annual savings, 2,450 tons of sustainable annual carbon emissions savings, and nearly $450,000 annual cost savings.
