Cogeneration Project

One of the leading companies in the industry selected EPS to build, own and operate a $5.2 million 3.1 MW cogeneration plant at one of their premier dairy facilities under a mutli-year power purchase agreement. The dairy is located in Southern California, which is subject to very strict emission and noise restrictions. EPS designed, commissioned, installed and now operates the cogeneration plant, enabling the facility to achieve savings on its electrical and gas energy costs, with a more reliable source of power, while reducing emissions to the level required by the local regulatory commission.

The net result: As a result of the success of this first installation, EPS has been awarded additional, multi-year power purchase agreement contracts at three of the company’s other facilities across the United States.

xChange Point Controls Project

A leading dairy company was operating below the desired efficiency level because its refrigeration system did not have a coordinated control system. By implementing EPS’ xChange Point® energy management solution, along with state of the art networked controllers, the company now has complete control of the refrigeration system. They also have remote access to the data from that system, along with monitoring capability of the compressed air and boiler systems, key temperatures, and alarm functions.

The net result: This project is on track to deliver an annual energy savings of 3.2 million kWh per year with a simple payback of one year, using the rebate from the utility company.

Energy Efficiency Project

Working with a large regional dairy manufacturer, EPS identified numerous opportunities to reduce its energy costs and improve overall energy efficiency. One of these projects involved an air compressor retrofit, achieved by installing variable frequency drives (VFDs) on two large air compressors, fixing compressed air leaks and eliminating the constant cycling of the compressors.

The net result: The retrofit resulted in an energy savings of nearly 920,000 kWh per year with a one year payback period.

Biogas Cogeneration Project

A leading regional dairy company that uses anaerobic digesters to treat the wastewater at its plants experienced an increase in the production of biogas as their operations grew. They turned to EPS to implement a cogeneration system using the biogas to provide electricity to the plant. The system also utilizes the waste heat from the engines to heat the digester influent. EPS completed the project successfully and the company is now able to produce a significant portion of the energy needed to operate its plants.

The net result: $400,000 in cost savings per year with less than a three year payback.
