EPS Corp Exceeds SCE Automated Demand Response Goals

  • 1.35 MW of industrial power demand reduced at Southern California packaging facility

  • Qualifies manufacturer for incentives up to $300 per KW of load reduction

Costa Mesa, CA December 14, 2010 EPS Corp today announced that the Automated Demand Response (Auto-DR) program which it designed and implemented for a leading packaging manufacturer successfully reduced 1.35 MW of power demand at the company’s La Mirada facility, exceeding the target load shed specified by Southern California Edison (SCE). This followed another successful Auto-DR event that EPS conducted at one of the company’s other facilities in Southern California during a peak period this summer, in which the company shed over 1.8 MW of electrical load, far exceeding the 1.585 MW target amount originally specified by SCE.

With this latest success, EPS Corp has now achieved over 28 MW of electrical load reduction at industrial customers in California and across the country through Demand Response and Auto-DR programs. In addition to exceeding the target electrical load sheds, both projects were completed on schedule and with minimal impact on the company’s production schedules. The two Auto-DR projects successfully reduced electrical use during an ADR event on a wide range of the packaging company’s primary equipment systems, including thermo formers, extruders, grinders, cooling towers, chillers and air compressors.

By participating in the Auto-DR programs, the packaging manufacturer achieved both energy and financial savings. The company qualified for incentives of up to $300 per KW of verified load reduction, which more than offset the purchase and installation costs of the equipment that enables the automated demand reduction. With the automated control equipment now in place, both of these facilities are in a position to participate in future Auto-DR events and to monitor and reduce energy usage and savings with a high degree of accuracy.

Auto-DR is an SCE sponsored program that enables customers with automated load control systems, such as energy management systems, to participate in demand response events without manual intervention and realize significant financial incentives and technical support as a result. The equipment to enable participation is remotely activated via the Internet upon receiving event or price signals from the utility. The program’s flexibility allows industrial customers to preselect their level of participation and gives them the ability to override Auto-DR signals or revise their load reduction strategy at their discretion. By participating, the companies help SCE reduce the demand load on the grid during critical peak periods.

“We are very pleased to have achieved these strong results in the Auto-DR program for another large industrial customer of Southern California Edison”, added Jay Zoellner, Chief Executive Officer of EPS Corp. “Our success with this and the many other Auto-DR projects we have implemented in California demonstrates EPS’s continued leadership role in industrial energy efficiency and demand response. Any manufacturing company with registered demands of 200kW or more will want to automate their demand response to avoid critical peak pricing events where electric rates may exceed $1.25 per kWh.”
