Permanent Load Shift

Substantial Energy Savings for Refrigerated Spaces

Permanent Load Shift (PLS) is an electric load reduction program that can deliver large and persistent energy savings to industrial manufacturers, particularly those operating refrigerated facilities.

In contrast to many reactive load curtailment programs, PLS is a proactive effort to reduce the energy load throughout the entire peak demand season. The significant and measurable energy savings that can be achieved with PLS can provide greater financial results and a competitive advantage over companies that only participate in Demand Response programs.

Permanent Load Shift PLS

EPS has extensive experience and expertise in these programs. We pioneered the program for San Diego Gas & Electric (SDG&E) and successfully implemented PLS at three of their larger industrial refrigeration customers with the following results:

Customer benefits

  • Almost 1.5 MW of savings in the first 15 months
  • Combined energy savings and financial incentives of more than $450,000
  • Constant and predictable load shift without impacting operations

Utility benefits

  • Shifted almost 1.5 MW to off-peak periods in the first 15 months
  • Manageable demand load during peak periods, reducing the risk of power outages
  • Incentive program effectively marketed and implemented at large customers with minimal resource requirements by the utility
